About

This Mexican-inspired Keto hot chocolate is the perfect winter warmer. Rich with chocolate and heavy cream, our Mexican hot chocolate has a hint of warming spice and zesty orange. This makes a great post-dinner dessert drink or as an accompaniment to a slice of Keto cake.

Is hot chocolate Keto-friendly?

As with all things low-carb, it is easy to modify your favorite foods and beverages to make them Keto compliant, and hot chocolate is no exception. The key to keeping it Keto is in using an unsweetened cocoa powder – you can add your preferred low-carb sweetener to your beverage to counteract any bitterness. It is also important to add some extra fats to your beverage, and in this instance, we have used heavy cream. If you wanted to boost the fats further you could always BULLETPROOF® your hot chocolate by blending it with butter, coconut oil, or BULLETPROOF® Brain Octane Oil (MCT Oil). Be sure to adjust your macros however if you make any changes.

Here are some tips to help you prepare the perfect Keto hot chocolate:

Our Keto hot chocolate is seasoned with cinnamon and a little chili powder. You can adjust the quantities as you wish if you desire a spicier drink or even add a little cayenne pepper. You may also use an alternative plant-based Keto-friendly milk if preferred. Just be sure to allow for any changes in your macros.

What is the best chocolate to use for this Keto drink?

To limit the number of carbs and keep this recipe Keto-friendly, we usually use cocoa powder. However, we have also decided to use unsweetened baking squares to add richness and creaminess.

  • 2 cup almond milk, vanilla or other flavors, unsweetened
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder, unsweetened
  • 1 teaspoon valencian orange extract by extra special
  • 0.7 ounce baking squares unsweetened 100% dark chocolate by scharffen berger
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon, ground
  • â…“ cup heavy cream
  • â…› teaspoon chili powder

Instructions

  1. Add the heavy cream to a mixing bowl and whisk the cream vigorously until light, fluffy, and doubled in volume. Alternatively, you may whip the cream in a stand mixer with a whisk attachment. Set to one side while you prepare the hot chocolate.
  2. Add the almond milk, cocoa powder, cinnamon, erythritol, chili powder, and orange extract to a small saucepan, and break the chocolate into small chunks then add to the saucepan. Set over a low/medium heat and whisk the mixture together, melting the chocolate into the milk. Heat until piping hot through but do not allow to boil over.
  3. Divide the spicy hot chocolate mixture between two large mugs. You may taste a little and adjust the seasonings if required. Feel free to add extra spice or more sweetener as needed, updating your macros accordingly.
  4. Divide the whipped cream evenly between the two mugs. Set the cream in the center of each mug so that you have a fluffy layer of cream on top. Serve hot and dust the cream with a little extra cinnamon if desired.
