Can I Cook This in A Crockpot?

We have cooked our Keto thanksgiving turkey recipe in the oven until the skin is perfectly golden and caramelized. However, if you would prefer to cook the turkey in a large crockpot, you may do so. Simply prepare as instructed, adding all ingredients to a crockpot and cook on high for five hours or until the meat is tender and falling off the bone.

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 2 teaspoon orange peel or zest raw
  • 1 ¾ pound turkey leg with skin
  • 1 ½ cup chicken broth, bouillon or consomme, ready-to-serve can
  • 1 tablespoon fresh sage
  • 1 medium – 2 1/2" diameter red onion
  • 1 teaspoon thyme, dried
  • ½ tablespoon orange juice
  • ½ teaspoon salt, sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ⅛ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Bring the butter to room temperature so that it is soft enough to mash. Finely chop the sage and add to the bowl with the softened butter. Add the orange juice, orange zest, garlic powder, thyme, salt and pepper. Mash together well to combine, creating a thick paste.
  2. Roughly chop the onion. Place the turkey leg on an oven tray and pat dry. Arrange the onion pieces around the turkey leg.
  3. Gently loosen the skin of the turkey leg. Place half of the butter underneath the skin and flatten down. Rub some of the remaining butter over the top of the skin and sit the rest around the tray. Add the chicken stock to the tray. You may use an alternative stock such as vegetable if preferred.
  4. Transfer to the oven and roast for 1 hour and 15 minutes, occasionally basting with the butter during cooking. The turkey should be entirely cooked through and piping hot in the center, with clear juices. Cook for longer if required. You may also add a little extra stock to the tray if needed.
  5. Serve the turkey leg hot. Carve into slices and drizzle over some of the orange and sage butter sauce. Serve with your favorite Keto Thanksgiving sides.
